Welcome to the Kent Amateur Radio Society web site. The Kent Amateur Radio Society (KARS) is dedicated to providing public service to Kent County, Maryland as well as the surrounding counties in both Maryland and Delaware. Our club is heavily involved in providing a cadre of trained communicators who are conversant in emergency communications protocols and the use of nationally recognized procedures and forms. We provide these services through our affiliation with the Radio Amateurs Civil Emergency Service and the Kent County Office of Emergency Services as well as the American Radio Relay League sponsored Amateur Radio Emergency Service which works closely with the American Red Cross and other relief agencies during emergencies and disasters.
Members and those who may become members of KARS may choose to assist in these efforts and become trained in the required protocols or they may choose to participate in other aspects of the amateur radio hobby. The choices are left to the individual.
We hold monthly meetings on the first Wednesday at the Heron Point Retirement Center located at 501 East Campus Avenue in Chestertown, MD. Meetings are usually held in the Activites Room in the main building but may move to the auditorium when programs of interest to the members are planned. Meetings begin at 7:00 PM and are open to amateur radio operators and non-amateurs alike who wish to attend. Topics cover a wide range of amateur radio related subjects. Some examples are: How to program a new radio; Moon-bounce communications; Meteor scatter communications; Emergency Communications Practices; Traffic Net Procedures; Shelter Radio Station Activation; and other topics of general interest to participants in the hobby.
Our web site contains many useful pages of information and tools such as Ship Plotter which displays AIS equipped ship and boat traffic on the Chesapeake and Delaware Bays on a map. In addition, there is a display of Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS) information covering both fixed and mobile stations in the vicinity of the Chesapeake Bay. Both APRS and Ship Plotter display information in real-time. You will also find information about the Kent Amateur Radio Society, our VHF and UHF repeaters, our activities and other useful information.
Please feel free to browse the web site.
